Water has always been considered one of the most essential elements for life. Without it, civilisations could not grow, nor could cultures and societies develop. For centuries, people have sought out methods to store, transport, and preserve water. While modern materials like plastic and metal have become ubiquitous in water storage, one material has remained important to water preservation: clay.

These Water Carriers represent the precious and precarious nature of water. They are high fired and will contain water without leakage but the exterior surface treatment alludes to deserts and scarcity. The copper neck additions add a ritual element that refers to the precious and scarce nature of this water. They are hand built from a tough black or white stoneware clay and fired several times after applying a range of oxides, slips and glazes.

Generally they hold between 3 and 8 litres. The minimum amount of drinking water necessary for survival in temperate climates is between 3 and 5, 8 litres according to UNESCO, when taking food preparation into account.
